Intelliband

Intelliband (intelligent run-flat bands) is a Transense trademark for a run flat band or safety band incorporating a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Run flat bands have been available for many years offering providing runflat capability that is independent of brand or type. They provide a cushion of rubber between the wheel rim and the road. The band locks the tyre to the wheel by filling the wheel well preventing the tyre bead from dropping into the well resulting in the tyre detaching itself from the wheel. The bands are used across a diverse range of vehicles from military to caravans. Incorporating TPMS provides additional safety features advising immediately of tyre deflation.

The link joins one end of the 2 halves of the band, the other end is secured by a bolt, 2 toggles and a nut. The sensor is mounted on the rear of the link facing the wheel well, with antenna pointing into the tyre cavity.

    TPMS Development Project

    The importance of correct tyre pressure is well known and in the current economic climate optimising fuel consumption and tyre life has never been so important. Everybody is directly effected by the cost of personal travel and the transportation of goods.

    Transense have been in extensive discussions with tyre and vehicle manufacturers,  service providers, and tyre accessory manufacturers to establish the market requirements for a robust, batteryless, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The initial focus has been the Off The Road (OTR) market with the commercial truck market to follow.

    OTR market applications include: surface mining, underground mining, quarry and cement, construction, ports and terminals, industrial and agriculture. This is a combined market size of over 160 million tyres per year, some of which cost over $80,000 each. A large market where tyre life and fuel efficiency is of critical importance to the vehicle manufacturer, vehicle operator, and consumer. The Transense batteryless TPMS sensor weighing only 2 grams provides the ideal solution.

    Combining TPMS with a reliable method for managing tyres represents the ultimate complete tyre solution for vehicle operators. It is recognised within the tyre, truck and OTR industry, that the use of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, a passive memory device, can provide permanent tyre identification  for supply chain and re-tread markets. Developing a product that can measure tread depth and tyre pressure assigned to a unique RFID and then automatically transmit the combined information to a central database provides a compelling tyre management solution. An additional benefit of this unique ID system being that it provides 100% reliable tyre tracking, helping reduce incidents of casing theft and illegal tyre switching.

    Transense recently completed a market research programme, in order to assess competing tyre management products and their respective strengths and weaknesses. The data gained from this programme, combined with 'clean sheet customer wish lists' and our technical expertise in adapting sensor technology to work within the hostile and demanding truck and OTR in-tyre operating environment, has enabled us to develop a unique TPMS product, incorporating the following key features:

    • A TPMS sensor that can be either based on a patch or features that can be included in the tyre manufacturing process that allows for the attachment of a sensor directly to the tyre.
    • The sensor to be easily attached and removed from the patch or tyre.
    • Compatible with current RFID technology.
    • TPMS sensor housing to include an RFID or allowing the RFID to be embedded within the patch or tyre.

    • The rubber compound has been selected for a fast in-tyre curing time, essential for aftermarket tyre processing.
    • Captive anchor which allows easy attachment and removal of the TPMS sensor.
    • Hermetic and durable TPMS sensor contained within a robust housing which can also accommodate an RFID.
    • The construction of truck and OTR tyres dictates the need for an efficient and durable antenna. Strain relief has been incorporated into the design which includes antenna supports.

    Stack's Batteryless Tyre Pressure and Temperature Monitoring System (TPMS) completely re-defines tyre pressure monitoring in motorsport. Based on patented SAW sensor technology, the problems associated with mounting batteries and complicated electronics in sensors on wheels have at last been completely eliminated.

    Stack use, under exclusive licence for Motorsport, Transense Technologies' patented Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensor technology which offers wireless, batteryless and compact operation. SAW Sensors are passive (no power required), wireless, low cost, rugged, and extremely small and lightweight, making them well suited for measuring pressure, temperature & torque (strain) in moving objects (e.g. tyres, drive shafts etc.). These characteristics offer significant advantages over technologies such as capacitive and piezoresistive sensors, which require operating power and additional electronics to make a wireless connection.

    A SAW pressure & temperature sensor can weigh <3g, with a resolution of 0.1 psi, and can be easily integrated into a racing wheel with excellent results. These systems enable the user to measure the pressure in each tyre up to 20 or more times per second. These higher sampling rates can be used to improve chassis set-up, as well as provide an early prediction of tyre failure.


    Each wheel sensor comprises of a 2mm thick x 12mm diameter SAW pressure/temperature sensor, an RFID tag and an antenna, all in a 16mm diam. x 14mm cylindrical housing.

    Installation: Each wheel sensor is mounted internally on the wheel rim or valve, or externally on the valve stem (specify sensor type required at time of ordering). The Interrogator Module is mounted in a convenient location on the vehicle, and 4 patch antennas are each mounted locally to each wheel (within approx 0.5m of the wheel), and connected to the Interrogator module by RF cable. The CAN data output can be connected to any standard data acquisition or driver display system supporting CAN.

    Operation: The interrogator module takes readings of tyre pressure and sensor (air) temperature from each wheel sensor continuously at a pre-defined rate between 1Hz and 10Hz. Pressure and temperature data for each wheel is output on CAN bus, with user configurable CAN-ID messages.
